Introduction

Greater Manchester Waste Group (GMW) is committed to maintaining the highest standards of health and safety in all aspects of its work. The success of this policy depends upon the co-operation of everyone within the Company to work safely together and promote a positive safety culture.

We are all legally bound to work safely under health and safety law and this policy aims to provide a healthy, safe and enjoyable place of work GMW.

The company :

  • recognises and accepts its responsibilities as an employer for providing a safe and healthy workplace and working environment for all its employees:
  • will take all reasonable steps within its power to meet this responsibility, and in particular:
  • will provide safe plant, equipment and ensure systems of work are in place that are safe in accordance with the approved safety standards and regulations
  • will provide safe premises, a safe place of work, safe access to and safe egress from it
  • will arrange for the safe use, handling, storage and transport of articles and substances which are inherently or potentially dangerous
  • will provide information, instruction, training and supervision to all staff with the object of helping them avoid hazards and contribute to their own, and others, health and safety whilst at work
  • will provide a healthy environment with adequate welfare and first-aid facilities
  • will ensure effective arrangements for joint consultation on health and safety.

Management Responsibilities

Every manager is expected to regularly review the arrangements for health and safety within their area of responsibility so as to provide and maintain safe places and systems of work. Managers must allocate sufficient resources such as competent staff, sufficient time and adequate information and training for all employees, to satisfy the requirements of this policy. Managers must consult their employees on all matters of health and safety.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees have a legal responsibility for their own safety and must avoid doing anything which may cause harm to themselves or others whilst at work. They must co-operate with management in all aspects of health, safety and welfare, and maintain their place of work and all equipment in a safe and tidy state. They must report all defects and instances where dangers are found, to their managers. They must not misuse or interfere with anything provided for the health, safety or welfare of those at work.

The company has a zero tolerance policy with regard to health and safety and will take immediate action, including the use of the disciplinary system against employees or other groups in breach of health and safety requirements.
