GMW's major operational sites are located at strategic positions throughout Greater Manchester, including four Materials Recovery Facilities, a Thermal Recovery Facility, three Transfer Loading Stations and twenty-five Household Waste Recycling Centres.

Materials recovered for recycling includes organic rich material, green waste, aluminium, steel, glass, paper, inert waste, books, textiles, cardboard, batteries, waste oil and even fridges and freezers. Energy is recovered from waste at Bolton Thermal Recovery Facility and the residue ash is recovered for use in construction projects.
